MATCH PREVIEW:

Valour FC plays its last regular-season match in the Alberta capital and needs a win and some help to keep its playoff hopes alive.

Last Saturday’s critical 4-2 win over Cavalry pushed Valour temporarily into sole possession of fourth place – and the final Canadian Premier League playoff spot – with 34 points on 10 wins and four draws against 13 losses. But York United’s come-from-behind 2-1 win over Pacific FC later in the day was critical, too, albeit for all the wrong reasons for Valour.

As it stands heading into Saturday’s action Valour is two points behind York United for the final playoff spot, with their Ontario rivals also having a match in hand. So, Valour needs to beat Edmonton and then hope York drops both of its final matches – a pair of home contests with Forge FC. At the same time, Valour FC needs a win to hold off HFX Wanderers. Both clubs have 34 points, but Valour owns the first tiebreaker with 10 wins to eight for the Wanderers.

3 VALOUR FC PLAYERS TO WATCH

#19 William Akio, FW: He’s absolutely scorching right now, with five goals in his last five matches, including a brace in the 4-2 win over Cavalry. He now has eight goals on the season to lead Valour and only five players in the entire league have scored more than him.

#7 Moses Dyer, FW: Second to Akio in goals for Valour with seven, including one in the win in Calgary last weekend. A confident finisher who has had the magic touch both from the penalty spot and in open-field play.

#82 Andy Baquero, D: The versatile Cuban can play both fullback and further up the park and is an excellent distributor and decision maker.

INJURED

-Valour has been without dominant centre back Andrew Jean-Baptiste for most of the season after he suffered a torn ACL in the Kickoff bubble at the start of the season. Jean-Baptiste did sign a contract extension this week to remain with the club next season https://valourfc.canpl.ca/article/i-wanted-to-commit-to-them-we-want-to-achieve-big-things-here-andrew-jean-baptiste-returns-for-2022-season

-Forward and leading scorer Austin Ricci is also unavailable due to a knee injury suffered in the Canadian Championship quarterfinal loss to Forge FC.

Suspended

-Midfielder Jose Galan will not be available due to yellow card accumulation.
