MATCH PREVIEW:

Two teams desperate to get back into playoff conversation meet Sunday in the Big Smoke. York, with 11 points, is currently six points out of the fourth and final playoff spot while Valour with one less match played, is seven points back.

Valour hasn’t played in 11 days, since a 4-2 home loss to Cavalry FC at IG Field on June 15th, while York travelled to Vancouver for Wednesday’s Canadian Championship match against the Whitecaps – a 2-1 win by the home side. Valour is attempting to end a five-match winless streak – three losses against two draws – which dates back to a 1-nil win over York at IG Field back on May 15th. York is also winless in five, including the Canadian Championship, with three losses and two draws.

THE GAFFER SAYS:

Valour GM and head coach Phillip Dos Santos on York United FC:

“They’re a team that doesn’t concede much. You look at them against Vancouver (in their Canadian Championship loss) and they’re very cohesive defensively. They’ve had some challenges to score goals but, as I said to our guys, when you’re hard to play against and don’t concede many goals or give them away, you always have a chance to win.

“York has sustained that consistency. Even missing quite a few pieces they are still solid defensively. It will be a difficult game.”

VALOUR FC SPOTLIGHT:

#8 Diego Gutiérrez, MF: ‘Guti’ provides a steadying presence in the middle of the park alongside veteran Daryl Fordyce and has become more dangerous on the attack in his second stint with Valour FC. He brings a spirit, an energy, and a competitive fire to the lineup, too.

CRITICAL NUMBER

6
York United has just six goals in 11 matches this season, fewest in the CPL. Not including their 2-1 loss to the Whitecaps in the Canadian Championship, the Nine Stripes have now gone six matches without scoring a goal – 1-nil losses to Valour, Cavalry and HFX Wanderers to go along with two 0-0 draws with Pacific and a third against Atlético Ottawa.
