WINNIPEG, MB., November 29, 2018 – Valour FC today announced the club has signed Canadian defender Skylar Thomas to a multi-year deal.
Thomas, 25, joins Valour FC after playing with the Charleston Battery of the United Soccer League (USL) who he joined in 2017, making 49 appearances for the club. The defender was previously drafted by Toronto FC in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft in the first round, 11th overall. He went on to play with the club’s affiliate team, Toronto FC II, in the USL.
“I worked with Skylar at the Olympic team level with the U-23s,” said Head Coach & General Manager Rob Gale. “He’s a centre-back of good stature; strong, athletic, quick and good in the air. Our fans will enjoy watching him play and we are lucky to have him in the Canadian Premier League.”
”I am very excited to get to Winnipeg, and to be a part of building a winning culture,” said Thomas. “I enjoyed working with Coach Gale at the national team level and built a great relationship with him in the time we spent together.”
Prior to his professional career, Thomas attended Syracuse University, playing with the Orange for four seasons. During his senior year, he was named All-ACC Second Team, and NSCAA All-South Region Second Team.
At the National team level, Thomas made his debut for Canada in the Men’s U-18 camp in Costa Rica in 2011. He was also involved at the U-20 and U-23 levels, participating in various camps.
Thomas will spend the off-season in his home province, Ontario, before joining the club for pre-season in March.
