MATCH PREVIEW:

Valour continues to play decent football, but isn’t getting the results. They fell 1-nil to Cavalry at home on Saturday, that match following a 3-2 loss to Pacific FC – the top two teams in the CPL standings. Worth noting: six of Valour’s eight losses have been one-goal decisions.

Still, despite the improvement in play of late the bottom line is Valour has but one win and one draw against seven losses in its last nine league games. As a result, Valour has not only fallen further from the league leaders, but now have to look back over their collective shoulders at both York United FC and HFX Wanderers, who played to a 3-3 draw Monday and are now just three and four points, respectively, behind in the race for the final playoff spot.

Valour will also enter this game against FC Edmonton minus two key players, as leading scorer Austin Ricci will miss the game for yellow-card accumulation while centre back Rocco Romeo is out after a late red card in the loss to Cavalry.

3 VALOUR FC PLAYERS TO WATCH

#19 William Akio, F: Ricci’s suspension means Valour will need someone to step up and press from the forward position and the CPL rookie might get a look tonight.

#2 Rodrigo Reyes, D: The same applies in the back line with Romeo out. Reyes started against Cavalry and finished with three tackles – second on the team to Romeo’s four.

#16 Daryl Fordyce, MF: Valour’s co-captain has been a steadying influence, both on and off the pitch, since he arrived last year. The suspensions mean the squad will lean on his play and his calming presence even more.

INJURED

Valour will be without dominant centre back Andrew Jean-Baptiste for the rest of the season with a torn ACL; also on the mend is MF Jose Galan, while D/MF Stefan Cebara missed Saturday’s game.
